If you’re already looking ahead and wondering what movies will wind up with Oscar nominations in early 2016, you should start paying close attention to The Revenant. The new trailer for the Leonardo DiCaprio wilderness revenge thriller has arrived and, wow, does this look beautiful.

There are two immediate takeaways from the new Revenant trailer: one, Leonardo DiCaprio looks to be delivering some career best work. He’s been nominated five times in the past, and just based on this trailer, he’s gunning for his first ever win. Two, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who won Oscars the past two years for his work on Gravity and Birdman, shot the s–- out of this movie. Lubezki and director Alejandro G. Iñárritu shot the film using only natural light and the early results are highly impressive. It’s hard to think Lubezki won’t be the front-runner for another Oscar. (One bonus takeaway: Tom Hardy has another wacky accent!)

As beautiful as it looks though, The Revenant has not been without its problems. The film shot from October 2014 to July 2015 because the locations Iñárritu were so difficult to get to, the production would spend 40% of its day traveling. Multiple crew members bailed or were fired from the shoot, with Iñárritu explaining, “as a director, if I identify a violin that is out of tune, I have to take that from the orchestra.” He also refused to use any green-screen of CGI in the film. “If we ended up in greenscreen with coffee and everybody having a good time, everybody will be happy, but most likely the film would be a piece of shit.” Suffer for your art, Leo!

Inspired by true events, THE REVENANT is an immersive and visceral cinematic experience capturing one man’s epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit. In an expedition of the uncharted American wilderness, legendary explorer Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) is brutally attacked by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team. In a quest to survive, Glass endures unimaginable grief as well as the betrayal of his confidant John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Guided by sheer will and the love of his family, Glass must navigate a vicious winter in a relentless pursuit to live and find redemption.

The Revenant opens in select theaters on Christmas Day and nationwide on January 8.
