Want to have a long happy marriage?

Believe it or not, it all starts with a modest engagement ring.

Researchers at Emory University in Atlanta have found that men who spend outrageous amounts of money on engagement rings were 130% more likely to get divorced than guys who spent considerably less.

The general rule of thumb is that men should spend around two months' salary on an engagement ring. But with this news, you might want to reevaluate things guys.

Now I'm not saying this is an open invitation to go buy a diamond that is going to run you close to what it would cost to eat three meals at Chilli's, but maybe you can scale things back a little bit.

You know, try to find a rock that is somewhere between needing a magnifying to see and one you'd find on the finger of say Kim Kardashian.  Okay, maybe not quite that big.

The average man now spends around $5,598 on an engagement ring according to the study, if that helps.

By the way, should your fiancée give you a hard time about getting all cheap with the bling, just say hey honey, I'm only doing it so we'll be happily married. Really, that's the real reason.

Good luck with that!

Oh, one more thing, please do me a favor and keep my name out of it when the subject comes up.
