It's a coast-to-coast safety challenge that includes the South Dakota Highway Patrol, and it's starting on Friday, August 1st, 2014.   The South Dakota Highway Patrol is teaming up with other law-enforcement officials from 14 different states to keep drivers safe on Interstates 90 and 94.

This cross country, 4-day, high visibility enforcement campaign is called the 'I-90/94 Challenge' and has the goal of zero fatalities on the two interstates from Washington State all the way to New York.  This 5,600 mile challenge will take place Friday, August 1st, 2014 through Monday, August 4th, 2014.  Superintendent of the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Colonel Craig Price says,

It's a big, important challenge and it's a real opportunity for our troopers to lead a multi-agency effort to make the interstate safer for the traveling public.  We believe a combination of aggressive enforcement and high visibility patrols will raise public awareness of the need for safe, smart behavior on our highways.

Joining the South Dakota Highway Patrol on the 'I-90/94 Challenge' will be many law enforcement officials from counties and local cities along I-90.

The challenge is part of a year-long highway safety campaign to reduce traffic fatalities by 15% in the United States. Participating states are Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota,  North Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington.
