Car Nearly Plunges into SF Quarry
A Buick nearly fell 300 feet into the Madison St. rock quarry Sunday night. It is believed the car was traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control, and went through a fence before coming to a halt a few feet from the edge of the granite cliff. The suspect is believed to have left the scene on foot.
Police ID Thief ...By Pants
21-year-old Travis Spotted Wolf of Kyle, SD. was charged with third-degree burglary, possession of stolen property, grand theft and a parole violation. He allegedly stole, among other things, a truck and lawn mower. How did he get caught? Police responded to a garage burglary and found his pants, along with I.D.. Police are not sure why he left his pants at the scene. [source]
Death on South Dakota Highway
A teenage girl from Badger died Monday afternoon in a three-vehicle crash on US Highway 14 at the west edge of Arlington that involved a school bus.
South Dakota Highway Patrol Captain Kevin Joffer says 17-year-old Savannah Koistinen was driving an eastbound vehicle that was pushed into the path of the bus by another vehicle just before 5pm Monday.
The driver of the car that rear-ended Koistinen’s vehicle, 25-year-old Cynthia Holmquest of Sioux Falls, was cited for careless driving. Holmquest is a Sioux Falls Police officer who was hired in August of 2012.
The bus was carrying 20 volleyball players from Clark-Willow Lake, along with their coach and the bus driver. [source]
Beware of Lottery Scam
South Dakota Lottery officials are warning players to beware of a new scam that “promises them winnings from a second chance Mega Millions drawing.” According to lottery officials more than a dozen lotto or scratch ticket winners have recived phone calls from an individual claiming to be with the lottery who advises them that they had won $5 million in a second chance drawing.Of course, personal information was needed to collect the prize. Lottery officials say they "never enter someone into a drawing, promotion for an added bonus or prize, or for any other reason without that person’s knowledge." [source]
S.F. Humane Society to Add Kennel Space
The Sioux Falls Humane Society will be adding nearly 200 kennels to accommodate overcrowding. The project is expected to cost a little over $1 million and will be funded by donations. Hot Air Balloon Lands on City Street
A hot air balloon landed on a Sioux Falls city street Wednesday evening. The pilot, Ron Oppold, and 5 other balloonists left Tuthill Park earlier in the evening but needed a safe place to set down on a rare windless night. He chose a quiet street on the east side with no power lines. best line of the night? "I had a first-time passenger that was a little nervous." [source]
Two 6k Wild Card Ticket Winners in Sioux Falls
Not one but two tickets sold in Sioux Falls matched all 5 numbers five white ball numbers but missed the Wild Card to win the game's second prize in the Wednesday drawing. That's a big six grand apiece. The jackpot sits at $460,000 for the next drawing, on Saturday. [AP]
