1996 was a year when Pop music began a resurgence. The Grunge movement was mellowing and Rap music was assimilating into the mainstream.

It's easy to forget that the second half of the 90s produced a huge amount of great hit songs. Some were one hit wonders, or novelty songs that have moved to a second life at wedding dances, and other were mainstream hits by alternative artists.

Here are some songs that turn the big 2-0 this year. They still sound fresh today (for the most part).

1) "Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix)" by Los del Río

Let's get this one out of the way. This was the biggest hit of 1996. You learned the dance from MTV then and still do it at weddings now.

2) "Barley Breathing" by Duncan Sheik

This song off Sheik's self-titles debut album really ruled 1997, but it first come out in the fall of 1996. Nowadays, Duncan is writing music for the stage and movies.

3) "C'mon N' Ride It (The Train)" by Quad City DJs

you might think that you're too cool for this song, but when this creation by the Florida DJ duo comes on you can not resist. From the club to sport stadiums this song still rules.

4) "Pony" by Ginuwine

This was the first single from Ginuwine's debut album Ginuwine...The Bachelor. It's a early example of Timbaland's production sound that would soon take over the radio.

5) "No Diggity" by Blackstreet

This Dr. Dre produced track sounds as great today as it did when it came out in September of 1996.

6) Coco Jamboo by Mr. President

This song from the German Eurodance group Mr. President was first released in March of '96.

7) "Firestarter" by The Prodigy

Before Dubstep there was electronica like this song.

8) "I Believe I Can Fly" by R Kelly

it's been two decades since Space Jam was in theaters. And two decades since I lost all my Space Jam plus toys that I got at McDonald's.

9) "What I Got" by Sublime

From their third album, this was Sublime's biggest mainstream hit.
