1. Winterset, Iowa

If you've ever seen or heard about "The Bridges of Madison County", this is the home of those famous covered bridges. But it is also a great place to visit for the holidays with a Christmas market, a parade, and a very special "meet and greet with Santa".

This small city near Des Moines is well known for its train ride to the North Pole at Christmastime. What's better than meeting Mr. and Mrs. Claus where they live?

3. Atlantic, Iowa

This small town on the Nishnabotna River may be quiet the rest of the year, but at Christmas, it is not out of character to see fireworks, lights galore, and much more. In fact, Atlantic has been called the Christmas Capital of Iowa, because they go all out this time of year.

4. Le Mars, Iowa

When I think of Le Mars, I think of Blue Bunny ice cream. But apparently, Le Mars is also known for its very Christmasy vibe this time of year. They have a Pioneer Village Christmas Wonderland, Santa's Workshop, massive light displays, and even horse-drawn carriage rides.

5. Storm Lake, Iowa

The rest of the year this area is a bustling resort community, but at Christmas, Storm Lake takes on the official role of the "home of Santa". The historic Carnegie Library is transformed into Santa's Castle and visitors are transported to the big guy's home.
