Traphagen, Johnson Reach Milestones In USF’s Win Over Black Hills State
SPEARFISH, SD — It was a milestone day for USF women’s basketball coach Travis Traphagen and senior Laura Johnson as both reached impressive marks in the Cougars 75-70 victory over Black Hills State in Spearfish on Friday.
The win was Traphagen’s 100th career win and gives him a career record of 100-52 (.657).
Laura Johnson scored her 1,000th point for the Cougars with 1:35 left in the game when she drained a three-point shot to give the Cougars a 68-63 lead. Johnson finished the game with 20 points which gives her exactly 1,000 career points for USF in her four years with the program.
After trailing the Yellow Jackets 21-14 with just under eight minutes left in the first half, USF closed the deficit to three points at the half as the Cougars bench scored 19 of the Cougars 31 first half points.
In the second half, USF gained control of the game as they went on an 11-3 run which was capped off by an Amber Paden Jumper with 4:07 left in the game giving USF a 65-56 lead.
Black Hills State continued to fight, as they closed the gap down to two points with just under two minutes to play thanks to a pair of Calli Bechtel free throws, but Laura Johnson answered with a three-point shot that gave her 1,000 career points and the Cougars a 68-63 lead.
USF hit free throws down the stretch as they went eight-for-nine from the stripe to preserve the win.
In addition to scoring her 1,000th career point, Laura Johnson also notched her first double-double of the season grabbing 10 boards in addition to her 20 points.
Jaicee Ulmer also had an impressive showing for USF as she scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Black Hills State’s Chelsey Biegler led all scorers with 28 points.
Next up the USF women’s basketball team will take on the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City on Saturday.
