Trimming of Main Avenue in Sioux Falls Is Complete Celebration Planned

What began as a concept is now finished and a portion of Downtown Sioux Falls is transformed.

City of Sioux Falls Civil Engineering made the announcement in a press release on Tuesday. Trumpeting the Main Avenue Road Diet streetscape reconstruction project completion! This summer’s project focused on recreating the stretch of Main Avenue from Eighth Street to Eleventh Street.

The Main Avenue Road Diet pilot project began in the summer of 2014. The project re-purposed one traffic lane of Main Avenue from Sixth Street to 14th Street to increase safety for pedestrians and bicyclists, add parking, extend public seating areas, and calm traffic.

Curb extensions, or bumpouts, physically narrow the roadway, creating safer and shorter crossings for pedestrians while increasing sidewalk and planting space available for streetscape improvements.

This year’s streetscape improvements took place largely along the east side of Main Avenue and include areas of brick pavers; additional amenities such as benches, bike racks, and trash and recycling receptacles; landscape improvements; and street tree plantings.

Festivity will also accompany the completion of the project. A community celebration and ribbon cutting for the project is planned for Monday, August 15, 2016, at 4:30 p.m., in the Carnegie Town Hall public parking lot, corner of Tenth Street and Main Avenue in downtown Sioux Falls.
