Two people - a teenager and his girlfriend - were charged with felonies after a Friday night fight in Sioux Falls that slightly injured a one-day-old baby.

Police officer Sam Clemens says it was around 9:00 pm when officers were called to the 200 block of South Duluth Avenue. He says a 17-year-old boy had allegedly stepped on the face of the infant, who is the son of his 16-year-old female cousin.

Clemens says when the mother told the 17-year-old not to step on her baby, he slapped the infant's face.

When the mother took the baby to a laundry room for protection, the teen's girlfriend followed and stepped on the baby's feet.

Cemens says the teen also grabbed the infant's mother and slammed her head against a wall.

Eventually the 17-year-old was arrested on charges that included abuse or cruelty to a child under the age of 7, underage consumption, resisting arrest, obstructing officers and fleeing police.

His girlfriend, 20-year-old Aubrey Lynn Heck of Sioux Falls, was arrested for the same abuse charge and also underage consumption.

Clemens says the infant was not seriously injured.
