Sioux Falls recently had the honor of having two of its city parks added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Terrace Park and the Japanese Gardens have now made the list. They join more than 80,000 properties selected by the National Park Service as sites that are considered "worthy of preservation."

Terrace Park, constructed on 52 acres the city purchased back in 1916, is known for its outdoor amphitheater, and a series of terraces that were added in 1922. The city built a popular outdoor aquatic center in the park in 1994, which has become a favorite hangout for many Sioux Falls residents during the hot summer months.

Not far away from Terrace Park, lies the beautiful Japanese Gardens. The Gardens constructed in the late 1920's and early 1930's are filled full of exotic flowers, arbors and pagodas.

The Japanese Gardens also provide an excellent view of Covell Lake and what long-time Sioux Falls resident hasn't taken a paddleboat ride on Covell Lake, right?

Being included in the National Register of Historic Places is the first step toward eligibility for federal preservation tax credits.
