A Huron man has been indicted by a Beadle County Grand Jury on charges of grand theft and bigamy.

Beadle County States Attorney Mike Moore says an arrest warrant has been issued for Wanye Songer of Huron. Songer was first married in 1969. He never got divorced from his first wife, before getting remarried in 1993.  Authorities were alerted when the second wife applied for social security.

Performance Radio News reports that Moore says this is the first case involving a bigamy charge he's dealt with in 20 years as a prosecutor in Beadle County. He says without the allegations of Social Security fraud, it's likely the bigamy charge would not have been brought.

Moore says the Office of the Inspector General brought the case to Moore's attention, but federal charges are not likely.

Bigamy is a Class Six felony, with a maximum punishment of two years in prison and four thousand dollar fine. Grand Theft is a Class Four felony with a maximum punishment of 10 years in prison and a 20-thousand dollar fine.
