Devastating Images of Typhoon Haiyan’s Aftermath in the Philippines
Warning: Some images above are graphic.
Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful storms ever recorded, made landfall in the Philippines on Saturday. Two days later, the death toll keeps rising (officially at about 2,000, but likely many times that), with experts predicting it will grow far higher as the true breadth of the devastation becomes clearer.
Even describing the magnitude of the destruction is highly difficult. In Tacloban, a city with a population of 220,000, the streets are so filled with debris that it is impossible to tell where they even begin. More than 600,000 people across the country have been displaced from their homes. Search-and-rescue efforts are having major problems even reaching the areas of greatest need, as many roads and bridges have been completely demolished and are impassable.
