SIOUX FALLS, SD — University of Sioux Falls athletic director Kevin Hesser has announced that head softball coach Travis Lape has resigned to pursue other professional opportunities.

He went 30-46 in two years after serving as an assistant coach for the previous two seasons.

“It was a tough decision,” Lape, 26, said. “USF is my alma mater, I loved my two years at USF and am very sad to leave the team, my assistant coaches, campus community, the administration and other coaches.”

“I am very grateful for the opportunity I was given to coach at USF,” he added.

USF went 15-27 this year, finishing 13th in the 16-team Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

The 15 victories the Cougar softball program recorded each of the last two years were the most win for a USF squad since the 2005-06 season, when the Cougars went 19-20. USF posted a .394 winning percentage during Lape’s tenure after going a combined 35-114 (.234) the previous five seasons.

The Cougars also enjoyed several individual milestones while Lape was at the helm. Senior Priscilla Quintana tied the program’s single season home run record in 2012, while junior pitcher Bailey Bouman recorded her 200th career strikeout this season. In the Cougars’ season finale on Sunday against Northern State, Amanda Walters became the first USF pitcher in history (dating back to 2003) to record 100 strikeouts in a single season.

The softball team was also very active in community service events and performed well in the classroom. Senior Katie Larson was honored as both a Myles Brand All-Academic scholar and the school’s female FCA Honor Athlete.

Currently, the Cougar softball roster includes 18 returning student-athletes. The Cougars lose six seniors to graduation.

“Coach Lape did a wonderful job in elevating the program and preparing it for NCAA Division II competition,” said Hesser. “The program is in great shape, so we can be selective in that regard with the next coach.”

“The NSIC is one of the best conferences in the nation for softball,” he added. “So we are confident there will be some strong candidates interested in the taking over the program.”

“It will never be good timing,” Lape said, “but I wanted to make my decision immediately after the season was over to give the new coach the best opportunity to move forward.”

“Coach Lape has done an outstanding job coaching our team and we’re disappointed,” Hesser added. “However, we are certainly supportive of Travis and respect his decision.
