Utah School Shames Kids Over Lunches
I cannot imagine something like this happening here in Sioux Falls, or anywhere, and yet it did! About 50 elementary school kids in Salt Lake City had their school lunches taken away and thrown out because their parents were behind on their payments to their kids’ food accounts. Outraged parents said the children were humiliated and demoralized. I’ll just bet they were!
A school district spokesperson in Salt Lake said the cafeteria workers couldn’t tell who was in debt until the lunches had been served and the meals were discarded because they couldn’t be served to someone else. Those children were told to get in another line for a carton of milk and a piece of fruit. Oh, well then….What??!!!
As if school life isn’t difficult enough for some children. Why didn’t they slap a “kick me” sign on their backs while they were at it? What awful, shameful, bullying behavior from a school district! In fact two Utah legislators held a press conference at the school after the incident and said just that. The school has issued an apology, but I’m guessing this won’t be the last that is heard about this.
