Vikings Come Up Short Against Wayne State
Wayne State scored on it’s second possession of the game, taking a 3-0 lead on a 36-yard Tyler Basch field goal with 5:06 remaining in the first quarter.
The Vikings ensuing drive stalled at their own 39-yard line. A 31-yard punt by Gabe Dunn, plus a holding penalty against the Wildcats backed Wayne State up to their own 20-yard line.
On the next play, Zach Osborn found Adam Stark for an 80-yard scoring strike to to give the Wildcats a 10-0 lead with 1:06 remaining in the first.
Augustana had it’s chances in the second quarter. Dunn missed a 37-yard field goal attempt wide right, and with 20-seconds left in the half, sent one wide left.
The Vikings finally got on the board with 3:46 remaining in the game on a one-yard TD run by Trey Heid to make the final score 10-7.
Augustana’s defense held Wayne State to 36 yards rushing, the third time this season they have held an opponent to less than 100 yards, and 224 yards in total offense.
The Vikings had 294 yards in total offense, 154 of those coming on the ground. Dajon Newell led the way with 86 yards on 11 carries. Heid was 15 of 33 passing for 140 yards, and one touchdown rushing. Noah Huisman caught four passes for 46 yards.
For Wayne State, Osborn was 11 of 21 for 188 yards and a touchdown. Charlie Davidson rushed 26 times for 53 yards.
The Wildcats improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the South Division of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Vikings fall to 2-3 and 0-1.
Augustana is on the road next Saturday, taking on No. 2 Minnesota State-Mankato at 1:00pm.
