SIOUX FALLS, SD — Augustana split with Southwest Minnesota State on day two of a four-game series and took three of four from the Mustangs on the weekend.  Kye Winter tossed a complete game to lead the Vikings to a 6-1 win in the first game, but the Mustangs responded with an 8-6 win in game two. Augustana now owns a 14-10 overall record with a 3-1 mark in NSIC action.  The Mustangs are now 6-12, 1-3 in the NSIC.

GAME ONE
Kye Winter finished with the complete game victory tossing all seven innings while giving up just one unearned run. He finished the game with eight strikeouts while giving up just four hits in the game.

Southwest Minnesota State scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning on a failed pickoff attempt by Winter. With runners on first and third, Winter faked a throw to third and overthrew first base allowing the Mustangs to take a 1-0 lead.

The Vikings answered with a three-run bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. Jake Petersen led off the game with a single and moved up to third on a double by Zach Dibble. Tony Viger walked to load the bases and Jack Goihl followed that with a walk to bring in Augustana’s first run to tie the game at one.

Alex Fink made it a 2-1 game with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Dibble and Brendan Koistinen followed with a single to center field to make it a 3-1 game.

Augustana added a run in the top of the third when Goihl hit in to a double play with runners on first and third to put the Vikings up 4-1.

The Vikings scored a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to earn the 6-1 victory over the Mustangs in the first game of a doubleheader.

GAME TWO
Augustana’s four-run second inning wasn’t enough to hold off the Mustangs as they fell 8-6 to narrowly miss sweeping Southwest Minnesota State.  Four Vikings tallied two hits each and David Borchardt and Kye Winter each recorded two runs batted in.

Brian Ness racked up a game-high four hits and three RBI, aided by his two-run home run to left center in the sixth inning.  Travis McGlauflin records the win for SMU and Grant Larson is saddled with the loss.  Both pitchers walk away with a 2-3 record while Corby McGlauflin earns his first save of the year.

Southwest Minnesota State pushed two across in the second inning for a brief lead.  Tony Viger led off the bottom of the second with a single and Jack Goihl followed with his own bas knock.  Alex Fink managed his way on with a bunt single to load the bases for Winter.

Winter pulled a ball down the left field line to score Vigor and Goihl.  Ben Ludwigson followed for the fifth consecutive hit and scored Fink with a single.  Jason Rasmussen hit a fly ball to center field, deep enough to score Winter for the fourth run of the inning.

SMSU erased the Vikings’ 4-2 lead with two runs of their own in the following half inning.  Two singles to lead off the inning set the Mustangs up to tie the game off a double and a sacrifice fly.  SMSU tacked on another run in the fourth inning when Ness singled and to score Ryan Engels to make it a 5-4 advantage for the Mustangs.

The Vikings took back the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a couple of hits.  Ludwigson walked, but the next two Vikings recorded outs.  Zach Dibble kept the inning alive with a single and Borchardt cleared the bases with a triple to right center and put the Vikings up 6-5.

Quick to respond once again, the Mustangs plated two more runs to take back the lead for good in the top of the sixth.  Ness’ shot to left center cleared the bases and put SMSU up 7-6.

SMSU scored an insurance run in the top of the eighth and the Vikings couldn’t muster up enough for a comeback and eventually fell to the Mustangs, 8-6.

The Vikings return to the diamond on Monday for a game against Northwestern (Iowa) at 2 p.m.
