Vikings Sweep Cross-Town Rival Cougars

SIOUX FALLS, SD — The University of Sioux Falls baseball team dropped a midweek double-header to rival Augustana College (22-10, 12-4 NSIC) Wednesday at Harmodon Park.  Augustana took game one 14-2 behind a season-high 17 hits by the team and held on for a 3-2 win in the nightcap to earn a full First Dakota National Bank Mayor’s Cup point.

Noah Coleman did all he could for the Cougars (14-15, 8-8 NSIC), going a combined 3-for-6 at the plate as well as tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings in game two where the senior lefty walked none and struck out three.

The Augie bats came thundering to life in the opener against the Cougars, pounding out a season-high 17 hits in a 14-2 rout in front of a mixed crowd of more than 200 at the Cougars’ home field of Harmodon Park.

The Vikings scored eight runs against senior righty Derek Fischer (4-3) and six against senior reliever/utility man Jeremy Varner.

Augustana got to Fischer early, sending eight men to the plate in the top of the first while building a four-run lead on three doubles and a pair of RBI singles. The Cougars scratched across a run in the home half of the second when Noah Coleman hit a double down the right field line, stole third and scored with Jordan Jeske’s outfield base hit.

But the Vikings’ offensive onslaught continued in the fourth, when they broke the game open with four runs on four hits to lead 8-1.

The Cougars got one back in the bottom of the frame with Gunner Peterson’s sacrifice fly plated Varner, who laced a one-out three-bagger down the right field line. But that would be all the scoreboard damage USF could manage, as the Cougars were limited to five hits in the contest.

Augustana put a three-spot on the board in the fifth and sixth innings to create the final margin,

The beneficiary of the Viking outburst was senior Kye Winter (5-0), who held the Cougars to two runs on five hits, walking none and striking out five for five innings. Fischer (4-3) took the loss on the mound, giving up eight runs on 10 hits. He walked one and fanned one.

Coleman went 2-for-3 and scored a run.

AUGUSTANA 3, USF 2
Game two was a classic pitchers’ duel, with junior righty Henry Ojeda locking horns with Augie freshman Lincoln Voss.

The game was scoreless until the fifth, when Auustana broke the tie on a two-run homer in the top of the fifth by Brendan Koistinen, his first career home and just his third hit of the season.

USF answered with a pair of unearned runs in their half of the fifth, tying it when Dylan Dwyer drew a bases-loaded walk after Varner smacked an single to right field to score Lopez, who beat out a bunt single earlier in the frame.

It stayed that way until the eighth, when Tony Viger singled home Jake Petersen to give the Vikings a 3-2 lead. The lead would hold, as Hamilton (2-1) worked four hitless innings of relief, fanning six to shut down the Cougars in the eighth and ninth to preserve the sweep.

Gunner Peterson had two hits for USF (14-15, 8-8), but the Cougars were again held to five hits, making a hard-luck loser of Ojeda (4-4), who allowed three runs on seven hits in 7.1 innings before handing the ball over to Coleman.

USF will travel to St. Cloud State this weekend.

Augustana hosts Minnesota-Duluth in a four game series starting on Saturday.
