If you were in the vicinity of West 57th Street and South Louise Avenue on Tuesday (July 18), it may have looked like we just received a real downpour. What really happened was a significant water main break that wreaked havoc in the area late Tuesday morning.

KDLT News is reporting the water main break occurred in the middle of the intersection, creating numerous lane closures.

As Sioux Falls street crews snapped into action, the left turn lanes in all four directions were closed, as well as the southbound right turn lane, and the inside eastbound through lane.

Drivers in the area were forced to use alternate routes like; West 53rd Street, Solberg Avenue, Oxbow Avenue, and West 59th Street for local traffic. Through traffic was routed down 69th Street while work was underway according to the KDLT News report.

Due to the severity of the water main break, lane closures may last through the week.

During that time, drivers are urged to use caution and slow down while traveling near the construction zone. To help speed up your commute time, you might consider using alternate routes while street crews effect repairs.

City officials told KDLT News they plan to release further information on the water main break when it becomes available.
