Just like the rest of the nation we are binge watchers here in South Dakota. But what are we watching and how and who mined that data? Once again, you can thank Google. Google Trends keeps track of who is searching for what and where.

More and more people are also dumping cable for online streaming services from Amazon, Hulu and Netflix. According to the Nielsen company 45% of American household subscribe to at least one of these and many go with multiples.

So what are we binge watching in our Plains states region? Here are the results compiled by Road Snacks.

  1. South Dakota - Friday Night Lights - A drama about a fictional, Texas high school football team. It went off the air in February of 2011, but apparently here in South Dakota it lives on.
  2. Iowa - Parenthood - This NBC drama about an older couple, their four grown children and their families, ended in January of 2015. It was developed by Jason Katims, the same guy who put together South Dakota's favorite binge watching show above.
  3. Minnesota - Arrested Development - This critically acclaimed comedy about a formerly wealthy and extremely dysfunctional family started out on Fox and ran there for 3 seasons until February of 2006. It was then revived for a fourth season on Netflix and a fifth season and possibly a movie are in the works.
  4. North Dakota - Making a Murderer - A ten-part documentary series explores the story of a man who did 18 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit and who is now incarcerated for another murder.
  5. Nebraska - Cheers - Pretty sure I don't need explain this one at all, but seriously? This show went off the air in 1993! Are things that far behind in Nebraska?
