Today lights the fuse on South Dakotans being able to buy fireworks in the state.

Whether you choose to light them yourself or sit back and let a trained pyrotechnics professional do all the work for you, there are some things you need to know.

South Dakota residents can legally buy fireworks from June 27 to July 5, but they can actually shoot them off through the end of the first Sunday after July fourth. Any violation of that time period is considered a Class 2 misdemeanor.

People who live out of state and are traveling through South Dakota can purchase fireworks from May first through the end of August.

South Dakota residents are allowed to shoot off federally legal fireworks.

So what falls under that category? Fireworks like; bottle rockets, sky rockets, roman candles, firecrackers, sparklers, smoke and punks, fountains, missiles, novelty fireworks, crackle and strobe, parachutes, wheels and spinners, sky flyers, display shells, and aerial items or cakes. They are all considered legal.

Now for the all important question, where can you legally shoot off your fireworks?

Public use of fireworks within Sioux Falls city limits is restricted to a specific Class 1.4G firework which has no audible report or projectile or launching component.

That means fireworks like; firecrackers, bottle rockets, roman candles, parachutes, and similar devices intended to propel or project flaming or explosive materials are not permitted within the city of Sioux Falls.

Fireworks may not legally be discharged on any public sidewalk, street, or alleyway and cannot be used on private property without the expressed knowledge and permission of the property owner.

Failure to comply with city fireworks laws may result in a fine of up to $200 and/or 30 days in jail.
