The bikini swimsuit was revealed to the public for the first time on July 5, 1946. Or should I say a woman's body was revealed when she walked out at the fashion show displaying a bikini.

Yes, July 5 is bikini day in my book. Why is this not a holiday I ask? God bless the inventor!

The bikini was created by French designer Louis Reard. It was fist shown at a fashion show in Paris, France.

It took a special kind of lady to be the first to show that much "forbidden" stuff. Reard chose Micheline Bernardini, an exotic nude dancer, to debut the futuristic beachwear.

Once famous actresses started appearing in bikinis, the idea took off. It soon became something most every girl would need to have in their wardrobe.

Where did the name bikini come from?

Reard named it after Bikini Atoll, a ring-shaped group of Islands where nuclear tests took place during that time.
