The Sioux Falls Canaries continued their week-long homestand on Thursday night, opening up a four-game series against their North Division rivals, the Winnipeg Goldeyes. The Birds received a strong outing from starting pitcher Kris Regas, but the Goldeyes offense woke up late in the game, handing the Canaries a 10-4 loss in front of 2,997 fans at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Regas made his third start of the season, and was dominant for most of the night, holding the dangerous Goldeyes offense scoreless over the first six innings. The left-hander was knocked out of the ball game in the top of the seventh after giving up a one-out, three-run homerun to Casio Grider.

Relief pitcher Josh Ferrell was the first out of the bullpen for the Birds, but struggled in his 20th appearance of the season. Ferrell (1-1, 5.61 ERA) gave up five runs, on a season high five hits while facing eight batters in his first loss of the season. Goldeyes right-fielder David Rohm capped off the big inning with a grand-slam to make it an 8-4 ball game.

The Goldeyes got a big offensive night from newly acquired outfielder Willie Cabrera, who went 3-for-5 at the plate with a run scored. Jacob Rogers also had a good night at the plate, going 2-for-5 with 3 RBI and a run scored.

The Canarie were led offensively by outfielder J.C. Linares, who extended his hitting streak to seven games after going 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Blake Schmit snapped his six game hitting streak after finishing the night 0-for-4 with a walk. Schmit continues to lead the American Association with his .373 batting average.

The four-game series continues on Friday night with Canaries RHP Shawn Blackwell (5-3, 6.07 ERA) making his 10th start of the season against Goldeyes RHP Edwin Carl (3-4, 4.96 ERA).
