A woman from North Carolina wanted to be blind so bad, she went to the extreme to make it happen.

Jewel Shuping was obsessed with losing her sight. She felt she should've been born blind. She learned how to read Braille and was determined to go blind. In 2006, with the help of a psychologist she consulted with, Jewel had the psychologist pour drain cleaner into her eyes. They even waited 30 minutes before they went to the hospital. The damage was done and over the next six months, Jewel's eyesight continued to get worse.

Jewel has Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), a rare condition causing able-bodied people to believe they are supposed to be disabled.

Jewel is studying education and wants to raise public awareness of BIID and help other people live independent lives.
