Not only is a female superhero about to get her very own TV series, but an openly queer female superhero is.

Back in May, we learned Batwoman would finally make her debut in the Arrow-verse on The CW’s epic annual crossover event. That was exciting as is, but now Variety is reporting that cameo is just the introduction to something much bigger: Batwoman is getting her own solo series. Most exciting of all? She’ll be depicted as an out lesbian, as the character is in the comics.

The Batwoman spinoff is currently in development at The CW and would debut next year if it got picked up to series. Vampire Diaries and Smallville writer Caroline Dries will write and executive produce alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Geoff Johns. It’ll follow Kate Kane, the modern version of Batwoman who debuted in the comics in 2006. She’s portrayed as openly gay and is of Jewish descent. Here’s the description of the series from Variety:

In the series, Kate Kane, armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.

This is huge news for LGBTQ representation on TV, not only on a major network, but in the DC Comics universe. If a gay DC superhero can have her own show, surely Warner Bros. can bring more some LGBTQ visibility to the big screen in the DCEU.

But for now, we have Batwoman to look forward to. The CW will release a casting notice for the role soon, and Kate Kane is set to make her debut on the Arrow / The Flash / Supergirl / Legends of Tomorrow crossover this December.
