The countdown is almost into the final month for the current fee structure to use the bussing system in Sioux Falls. Shortly after 2016 begins, a ticket to ride will cost more.

Sam Trebilcock Sioux Falls transportation planner says over the past 20 years, operating costs for busses have risen from 5 million to 8.8 million dollars. Fares did not increase at all during that time.

Trebilcock says the change was discussed and approved by Sioux Falls City Council. “This summer we updated our rate structure for the first time since 1996. It will be implemented with fixed route fares going up from $1 to $1.50 for one ride and then $25 to $30 for monthly rides.

The fee increase for regular bus service was hard fought. However, proposed increases for paratransit rides did not pass muster.

Trebilcock believes that effort could be revived. “There is discussion now about bringing that back. We were asking for an increase from $2 to $3 last year. The Council may consider an increase to $2.50 (in the future).” The increase for regular fares will become effective January 4, 2016.
