By Sanford Children's Hospital

Three-month-old Wesson was sick. They first thought he had the flu, but as Grandma babysat, he became more and more lethargic, so she rushed him to the ER.

The news was dire – they flew him to Sanford Children’s, hoping for a miracle. Once there, they received more grim news – Wesson had Infant Leukemia, a very rare condition, and he needed immediate surgery.

As sick as this sweet baby was, he was not expected to make it through surgery… but he did. After further tests, he was given just a 45-55% chance of survival.

Wesson went on to undergo an experimental treatment for a research study. He fought so hard but earned his angel wings just one month after his first birthday.

His funeral was a celebration of his life, and his parents have made it their mission to find a cure, so other families won’t have to endure the pain of losing their babies.
