The South Dakota Departments of Transportation and Public Safety closed a large portion of I-29 from Watertown to the North Dakota border on Sunday afternoon. The closure is due to the severe winter storm that is currently threatening the state.

Be advised the I-29 closure affects both north and southbound travel.

KSFY TV is reporting that I-90 still remains closed between Exit 67 east of Rapid City to Mitchell for eastbound traffic and from Mitchell to Wall for westbound traffic.

Heavy snow and high winds are making travel extremely difficult in the closure areas throughout the state. Officials say that will continue to be the case well into Monday (December 30).

According to KSFY, many highways across the state are experiencing heavy drifting, along with ice-covered, snow-packed, and slippery conditions.

Motorists are encouraged to keep up-to-date on South Dakota road conditions by calling 5-1-1 or visiting safetravelusa.com/sd/.
