Sioux Falls Sees an Increase in Car Theft as Colder Weather Arrives

It's inevitable, as the deep freeze of January and February arrives, so will the temptation for car thieves to steal vehicles warming up they find unlocked and unattended.

I mean, it's only human nature to want to warm up your car before hopping inside on a cold winter's day, right?

However, failure to lock your vehicle while it's reaching optimal temperate is also an open invitation for a car thief to make off with your ride when you're not around.

KSFY TV is reporting that a number of unattended vehicles have already been stolen so far this winter in the Sioux Empire.

Sergeant Sean Kooistra with the Sioux Falls Police Department told KSFY, as of last week, 20 vehicles have been reported stolen in and around the Sioux Falls area.

Kooistra wants to remind all drivers to make sure to lock your car doors while your vehicle is warming up.

According to the PD, most of the vehicles stolen were recovered in different areas of the city than where they were first reported stolen.
