Sioux Falls Police Department Public Information Officer Sam Clemens says a 46-year-old woman fell victim to a phone scam this week.

"We had a woman that received a phone call from somebody claiming to be with the U.S. Grant Department. The person said she had won some money or was offered a grant. But, she had to pay some fees. They wanted those fees in the form of I Tunes gift cards. Unfortunately she got $450 worth and gave the numbers to the scammer over the phone before she realized it was a scam."

If you get one of these calls, Clemens offers this advice.

"The best thing you can do is to take some extra time and check out to find out if it's legitimate. If people are asking for any type of gift cards and want numbers over the phone. That is a red flag in and of itself."

Clemens says more than likely the Sioux Falls woman will never get her money back.
