Whether it's a necessity or a choice, more and more Americans are working later into their lives these days.

In fact, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the percentage of older employees in the workforce is now at an all-time high - 6.6 percent compared to 5.9 percent six years ago.

In South Dakota, that percentage is even higher.

The bureau's American Community Survey found that 8.6 percent of the workforce in the Mount Rushmore State is age 75 and older - that's the third-highest rate in the nation, right behind Nebraska and Vermont.

  • Nebraska - 8.9%
  • Vermont - 8.7%
  • South Dakota - 8.6%
  • Connecticut - 8.3%
  • North Dakota - 8.3%
  • Maryland - 8.2%
  • Alaska - 8.1%
  • Oklahoma - 7.8%
  • Wyoming - 7.8%
  • Kansas - 7.7%
  • Massachusetts - 7.7%

West Virginia has the lowest percentage for workers age 75 and older - 5.3 percent.
