There’s ‘No Day But Today’ To See RENT At The Washington Pavilion

RENT is probably one of the most popular musicals of all time! I mean who doesn't know the iconic "Seasons of Love"? Sing it with me now, "525,600 minutes!"

Anyway, the 20th Anniversary tour is in Sioux Falls at The Washington Pavilion for one more show! Tonight (February 26) at 7:30!

I was lucky enough to attend the show last night and, as with all the shows the Pavilion brings to town, it did not disappoint.

I've seen the movie version of RENT, the Sioux Empire Community Theatre's production of RENT, and one other touring company do RENT and I think it really speaks to the genius of Jonathan Larson (FYI- he wrote the book, music, and lyrics for RENT) that every time I've seen the show, it may be a smidge different, but I loved it! And I couldn't help but sing along, albeit quietly, in my seat.

Friends of mine that don't usually like musicals, I tell them to give RENT a try, because the music isn't like musicals of the past. It's not like a normal musical, it's a cool musical. It's a rock opera! According to the Pavilion's website, "A re-imagining of Puccini's La Bohème, RENT follows an unforgettable year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its inspiring message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this timeless celebration of friendship and creativity reminds us to measure our lives with the only thing that truly matters—love."

The whole cast was great. Cody Jenkins as Mark Cohen was a perfect fit. Mark's character kind of weaves all the storylines together so he is integral! Aiyana Smash as Mimi Marquez was on point. Mimi's song "Out Tonight" is full-on dancing and singing and girl pulled it off! The casting of Angel is also very important. He is the heart of the show in a lot of ways and Joshua Tavares as Angel was exceptional. He worked those heels like a pro!

The original RENT made stars of Idina Menzel, Taye Diggs, Jesse L. Martin, Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal, just to name a few.

RENT definitely deals with some adult subject matter including AIDS, drug addiction, sexual situations, and some adult language. The show is recommended for ages 13 and up, but make your own decision for your family.
