‘Total Request Live’ is Coming Back to MTV

Total Request Live or as it was more commonly known, TRL, was a staple for MTV in the late 90s and early 00s. It lasted from 1998 until 2008, but it was fizzling out even in it's last few years. Once Carson Daly left, they should have just called it a day.

Plus, the show was supposed to be about the requested music videos, but sometimes they would literally play the video for 10 seconds and then cut back to the show. It was annoying. In it's prime though, it was glorious. It gave platforms to acts like Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys and Eminem.

But enough about the past TRL because MTV is revamping the show for an October 2nd debut. The show will once again shoot live in a newly remodeled Times Square Studio with rotating hosts. The hosts will be D.C. Young Fly, Erik Zachary, Amy Pham, Tamara Dhia and Lawrence Jackson. I've never heard of any of them, but I didn't know who Carson Daly was before TRL either.

MTV President Chris McCarthy also said in a press release that the show will have new ways to integrate social media like Instagram and Snapchat. In an interview with The New York Times, McCarthy said this about TRL and MTV as a whole:

“MTV at its best — whether it’s news, whether it’s a show, whether it’s a docu-series — is about amplifying young people’s voices. We put young people on the screen, and we let the world hear their voices.”
