It was incredibly disappointing when the TV series Deadwood ended in 2006. But thirteen years later nearly the entire cast is back for a movie continuation of the story loosely based on historical events.

A beautiful trailer for the movie was released yesterday. It gives a better look at what the story will be about and who is all back, which shows almost every cast member from the season 3 finale who is still alive from the season 3 finale is back for the film.

The main players in the once lawless town return to the cast: Ian McShane as Al Swearengen, Timothy Olyphant as Seth Bullock, Dayton Callie as Charlie Utter, Gerald McRaney as George Hearst, and Robin Weigert as Calamity Jane.

Notably not returning is Powers Boothe in the role of Cy Tolliver since his passing in May of 2017. Also Bree Seanna Wall, for whom Deadwood was her only acting credit, is not back as Sofia. She has been replaced by Lily Keene who has appeared on This Is Us.

When the show ended without a real conclusion, and historically just shy of the fire of 1879 that gutted the town, I was mad. Having lived in the Black Hills and worked in Deadwood, it was personal to me to see the story told. Plus it was a damn good show. The movie will pick up just after South Dakota gains statehood in 1889.

The most interesting thing to me about the trailer, more so from the perspective of a South Dakotan rather than a fan of the show, is how much more similar Timothy Olyphant and John Hawkes look like Seth Bullock and Sol Starr in photographs. The other characters just look like older versions of themselves from 2006.

The movie Deadwood will premiere on May 31 on HBO.
