The casting of True Detective Season 3 has been pretty perfect to date, so we were bound to experience at least one “huh.” Enter Blade baddie Stephen Dorff, who joins Mahershala Ali in a co-lead role for the HBO drama’s third season.

HBO confirms that Dorff will take the role of Arkansas State Investigator Roland West, who (via EW) “has his life and career influenced over three decades by a baffling crime.” As we learned previously, True Detective Season 3 will also feature The Girlfriend Experience and Fantastic Beasts star Carmen Ejogo as a schoolteacher connected to two missing children.

The third season is said to chronicle “a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.” Series creator Nic Pizzolatto will serve as Season 3’s primary writer, aided by Deadwood boss David Milch, who will direct the fourth episode. Pizzolatto will also showrun and direct with Jeremy Saulnier, while additional executive producers include Scott Stephens, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey and original director Cary Fukunaga.

No one necessarily had “Stephen Dorff” on their True Detective Season 3 wishlists, but might the third year bring us back to the glory days regardless?
