"Music hath charms to soothe a savage beast. . ." With apologies to William Congreve, the author of the 1697 poem containing that often misquoted passage, music also motivates, encourages, calms, and entertains.

All of these attributes come into play every time we listen to a favorite song or album. We are seeking something from our music that nothing else can provide. During our current global challenges, people are turning to their music more than ever for solace while isolating.

But according to the results of a recent Spotify and OnBuy.com (an international online marketplace company) study of the most listened to "lockdown songs", we apparently haven't lost of sense of humor, yet.

By comparing the top 500 Spotify lists with the words, "lockdown, quarantine, coronavirus and/or COVID-19 in their title" and analyzing over 35,000 songs, they've come up with the top "lockdown tunes".

Here are the Top 5:

  1. Toxic - Britney Spears
  2.  Stayin' Alive - The Bee Gees
  3. U Can't Touch This - MC Hammer
  4. Don't Stand So Close To Me - The Police
  5. I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor

Some of the other favorites in no particular order include:

  • It's the End of the World, As We Know It - R.E.M.
  • Fever - Peggy Lee
  • Harder to Breathe - Maroon 5
  • Can't Feel My Face - The Weeknd
  • Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
