Did you know that YouTube started out as a dating site? One of the company's founders, Stephen Chen explained it like this:

“We always thought there was something with video there, but what would be the actual practical application? We thought dating would be the obvious choice.”

Those who began using their platform in the early days of the website quickly disregarded the video dating and began uploading their own videos. Then, 18 months later, Google bought YouTube and helped turn it into the powerhouse it is today.

These days YouTube has over 2 billion viewers every month on their site. Those viewers watch over 250 million hours of content on their smartphones, tablets, laptops, and television.

But what was the first video ever uploaded to YouTube? And who posted it? Well, take a look below.

Yep. Elephants at the zoo. That's one of YouTube's founders, Jawed Karim at the San Diego Zoo (before he became insanely rich) back in early 2005. The site was still in its beta form back then, which basically means it was still being developed and only a limited number of people had access to it.

It's hard to believe that this was the first video ever uploaded on a website that changed the world. But, in a way, it's kind of fitting, don't you think? YouTube is all about personal experiences, or at least, that's how it started out. And who doesn't like Elephants, am I right?
