Since I pride myself on being somewhat of a foodie, most of the information compiled in this CheatSheet article was well-known to me. However I'll admit that I did not know it isn't necessary to refrigerate berries if you plan on eating them within a few days of purchase.

While I was out in Montana I chastised my younger sister for having onions in her crisper drawer (no, that's not a euphemism for something else) and she told me it was our older sister who had put them there, that the directions on the bag the onions came in specifically directed that they be refrigerated and so they were.

I bought the same kind of onions a few days later and proved to her that our sister Carmela may have been hallucinating at the time she refrigerated the poor, sweet onions. (This may be a very good example of the kind of asinine things which siblings argue about!)

Here are just some of the items you shouldn't be refrigerating:

  1. Melons
  2. Avocados
  3. Bananas
  4. Tropical Fruits
  5. Coffee
  6. Bread
  7. Salted Butter
  8. Apples
  9. Tomatoes
  10. Hot Sauce

In any case if you have any doubt about the items you have jammed into the door holders, veggie and fruit bins and on the overstuffed shelves of your fridge, check out the full list of items you don't have to have in there.
